ENERGY STAR
and the
environment

Today, 17% of the energy consumed in Canada is used to run our homes. Every time we use energy from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, we produce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

An ENERGY STAR qualified new home reduces emissions by approximately three tonnes per year. Each home built to this standard is a small but important step towards lessening the impact of global warming.

The ENERGY STAR mark is administered and promoted in Canada by Natural Resources Canada.

What are ENERGY STAR qualified new homes?

Since 2001, Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Office of Energy Efficiency has promoted the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitored its use.

In 2005, NRCan expanded the ENERGY STAR Initiative in Canada to include energy-efficient new homes being built in Ontario. ENERGY STAR qualified new homes are approximately 30 to 40 percent more energy efficient than those built to minimum Ontario Building Code standards. The increased efficiency of these homes translates into significantly reduced energy costs for homeowners.

How are ENERGY STAR homes better than others?

From top to bottom, homes that are ENERGY STAR qualified incorporate a range of energy efficiency measures that include:

  • Increased attic insulation. Heat rises so we’ve increased the insulation to keep it from escaping through the roof.
  • Low E Argon windows and patio doors with insulated spacers. This glass reduces condensation, reflects sunlight away in the summer and keeps heat in during the winter.
  • Increased wall insulation - better for heat retention throughout the home, as well as reduced noise penetration.
  • Extra height basement insulation. Provides insulation blanket for decreased heat loss and a more comfortable future living space.
  • Increased high efficiency foam insulation in exposed floor area. This eliminates cold spots over the garage, under Bay and Bow windows and all other boxed out areas.
  • Programmable ENERGY STAR qualified thermostat. Take advantage of the furnace capability with a fully programmable thermostat that allows efficient comfort settings.
  • Sealed ductwork. This provides more efficient flow of heating and air conditioning for a more comfortable home.
